What we do

Multi utility contractors delivering the full range, from the ground up.

About Us

A family-run utility contractor
since 1980

Founded by Tony McFadden in 1980, we’ve grown from a small family operation into a multi utility contractor trusted by some of the UK’s largest water companies and construction firms.

We’re an end to end operation. That means one contractor from enabling works through to dig, install, reinstate, and site clear. No subcontractors to chase, no handoff points. You deal with the people who actually do the work.

Our company has a family feel to it. You'll deal with the people who actually do the work, not a call centre.

McFadden Utilities

We hold WIRS accreditation, ISO triple certification (9001, 14001, 45001), Achilles registration, and Constructionline Gold membership. Our teams work from depots in Hertfordshire, Heathrow, Rickmansworth, and Staines, giving us fast coverage across our service area.

Common questions

Quick answers to things we get asked a lot.

What areas do McFadden Utilities cover? +

We’re based in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, and cover six counties as standard: Hertfordshire, London, Surrey, Essex, Cambridgeshire, and Berkshire. For larger projects we’re happy to travel further.

Are you WIRS accredited? +

Yes. McFadden Utilities is a WIRS-accredited self-lay provider, meaning we can design, install, test, and commission new water mains that are adopted by the water company on completion.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency call-outs? +

Yes. We maintain standby crews for emergency water mains repair, burst mains, and leak response around the clock, seven days a week.

What is a self-lay provider? +

A self-lay provider (SLP) is a company accredited to install new water mains and services on behalf of a developer, as an alternative to the local water company doing the work. It’s often faster and more cost-effective.

Can you handle both water and electric connections? +

Yes. As well as being a WIRS-accredited self-lay water provider, we deliver ICP (Independent Connection Provider) civils for new electricity connections, including trenching, ducting, and chamber construction.

Do you work with water companies directly? +

Yes. We’ve delivered projects for Affinity Water, Thames Water, and the Anglian Water Network, carrying out repair, maintenance, and network expansion programmes.

What is the difference between interim and permanent reinstatement? +

Interim reinstatement is a temporary surface repair (usually cold-lay tarmac) applied immediately after utility works. Permanent reinstatement is the final surface restoration to NRSWA specification, typically completed within six months.

Do you hire out plant and machinery? +

Yes. Through T. McFadden Plant we hire grab lorries (TfL DVS compliant), mini diggers, and small plant across London and Hertfordshire.

How long has McFadden Utilities been operating? +

McFadden Utilities was established in 1980, giving us over 40 years of experience in water infrastructure, civils, and utility contracting across the South East.
